Images for Families

The desktop image we created for home use is applicable for kids and adults alike. The image contains more of the standard apps you would expect a computer to have: a web-browser, office apps, PDF viewers, printing, scanning, media players, calculators and a few games. If you or your kids have ever used a Chromebook, the apps will be familiar. Just like a Chromebook, Microsoft apps are not available natively, but can be accessed over the web in Office 365.

Most school districts are using Office 365, G-Suite, or both for students. We have partnered with teachers from local schools to ensure these platforms, as well as ALL resources students are being asked to use from home, work without issue.

College students home for the remainder of the semester will find popular virtual meeting clients as well as chat and collaboration clients on the Home Edition along with popular VPN plugins for connecting to their university's remote access systems.

Added Security for Peace of Mind

Your family's security is a focus of every change to the Home Edition. Enhanced security and privacy configurations were added to harden the software you use everyday. Nothing is tracked on the image. As with the corporate images, the family editions are configured to have no access to the hard drive of the machine it is running on.

Two family Editions are offered. The first is as described above and the second adds more in-depth security filtering and removes collaboration and chat clients. It is meant for younger kids and, as mentioned on the main article, it is designed to give parents peace of mind while the kids are online.  A lot of testing and development was put into this custom filter engine to ensure your children are protected, no matter where they go on the Internet. Our engine curates bad URLs and IP addresses from over 30 listing sites across the Internet, including categories such as:

  • phishing
  • malware
  • suspicious behavior
  • ads
  • drugs
  • fraud
  • social media
  • gambling
  • phishing
  • piracy
  • pornography
  • proxy
  • ransomware
  • redirect
  • scam
  • torrent
  • trackers
  • youtube
  • malicious IP hosts

As of writing this article, this filter contains a deduplicated list of over 3 million web-sites - and updates it weekly. The Kids Edition downloads and imports this filter on every boot. This makes the boot process take a few minutes longer than the Home Edition, but adds additional peace of mind. It blocks links to malicious IP addresses and other sites that may not be appropriate for young children, like Facebook, Google, Youtube, reddit and others.

While no technology completely protects us online, everyone working on this project has built this with our families in-mind and as the first users. We have focused most of our energy on getting the Kids Edition out of Beta.
